Analyses of the welfare state have mainly considered problems of a static nature. The overall purpose of this research program is to study the welfare state from an evolutionary point of view. How does the design of welfare systems influence the incentive structure, and thereby the behavior of economic agents? In addition, issues such as capital accumulation in the welfare state and the role of institutions in economic performance will be considered.
