Funding for a new study: How to succeed in life

2017-07-03

Daniel Waldenström, IFN, is part of a group of international researchers that have received funding from Norface, New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe, a collaborative partnership of national research funding agencies from 19 European countries. In the project ”Impact of childhood circumstances on individual outcomes over the life-course” the researchers will study what conditions are needed for a person to succeed in life. The question is the significance of family background and the policy's approach to creating equal opportunities, and how this affects the results.

- In concrete terms, we will perform various empirical analyzes of education, career choices, income, wealth focusing on a number of western countries, especially Germany, France and Sweden, which are the three countries where the research groups will be located. We will investigate both what is needed to be able to leave the bottom of the distribution and to reach the top," says Daniel Waldenström.

He explains that it will be "especially exciting to see if we can understand the importance of politics, especially education and taxes, for people's opportunities to create the life they want to live."

The project runs 2017-2020 and is led by researchers from CESifo and the University of Munich, Cergy-Pontoise University and IFN.
