Jonas Vlachos is associate professor of economics and holds a PhD from the Stockholm School of Economics. His research has touched upon several different fields: international economics, the importance of financial markets for economic development, and political economics.
Currently, Jonas is working on a project analyzing how different aspects of competition affect hiring and wage setting practices among firms. As not just firms, but also political parties, are likely to respond to competitive pressures, the role of political competition for the governance of Swedish municipalities is also analyzed.
Jonas is also involved in putting together a large data base aimed at analyzing the determinants of effective teacher behaviour. Within this project the changing composition of the Swedish teacher force will also be addressed.
In addition to his research, Jonas was the editor of Ekonomisk Debatt (the journal of the Swedish economic association) during 2005 and 2006. In 2002-2003 he was the secretary of the Economic Council, and during 2003-2004 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago.
