Current Research

Peers and Culture. Joint with María Sáez-Martí, Reaserch Institute of Industrial Economics. We analyze the evolution of cultural traits. Parents socialize their children to maximize lifetime utility in response to their children’s merit guided adoption of traits and values from society.

Do Grades Discourage or Motivate, Joint with Johnny Zetterberg, IFAU. We analyze the effect on school performance and educational attainment of receiving or not receiving feedback in school. We use detailed data on 9000 Swedish school children born in 1967, containing measures of IQ, test scores and grades as well as family background information and school attainments. We also use data on all children from the cohorts born in 1969 and 1970 to identify the effect on adult educational attainment of being graded.

Child Care Costs and Fertility, Joint with Eva Mörk, IFAU, and Helena Svaleryd, Reaserch Institute of Industrial Economics. Exploiting the exogenous variation in child care cost changes across Swedish families and municipalities that resulted from the 2002 nation wide reform of child care fees, we explore the consequences for fertility.
