Newly developed data show that after successful coups, there is a 42 percent chance that a new constitution is implemented. We explore these constitutions, and that military coup plotters tend to draw on elected constitutional assemblies. Most of the coup constitutions are similar to those of other autocracies. We argue that our findings inform ongoing debates about regime transitions.
