We study how ownership, entry and competition affect productivity and efficiency in home assistance and retail. We make use of bigger data bases and new data which did not exist before the digitilization of these markets. Geographical market differences are highlighted in the analysis.

For home assistance, we will use new data collected directly from a number of Swedish municipalities. The data collection is enabled by the recent digitilization, with electronic measurement of the time use of the employees. Because of this technological development, we can introudce new and high quality data to the literature. For retail, we have access to large and detailed data bases covering all retail stores in Sweden since 2001. Such a data base, with information on owership, store type, and sales area, is unique and enables extensive analyses at the store level. How has productivity and effeiciency developed in home assistance and retail?
The project is financed by a grant from Jan Wallanders och Tom Hedelius stiftelse.
