When the euro was introduced, Sweden chose to remain outside. But we now live
in a very different economic and political reality than at the turn of the millennium.
Sweden’s economy is stronger and more closely intertwined with the global economy.
More countries have adopted the euro, the institutions of the EU and the monetary
union have evolved, and the geopolitical situation has changed dramatically.

The Calmfors Commission of 1995–96 provided the analytical basis for Sweden’s
decision not to join the euro at its launch. In this report, leading Swedish economists
and political scientists present new analyses of the implications of euro membership
for Sweden and how this could be achieved.
