Privatizing Welfare Services – An IEO Seminar

Mårten Blix, IFN, presented his and Henrik Jordahl’s book Privatizing Welfare Services – Lessons from the Swedish Experiment at the IEO Seminar ”Sweden’s Successful Financing of A Strong Welfare System: A Model for Other Countries” on December 14th.

Their book focuses on health care, education, and elderly care and draws on research on the consequences of introducing market-based mechanisms to deliver welfare services. The book also addresses the challenges of financing the Swedish model of welfare services as well as the importance of management practices and public opinion.

Professor Erik Hanushek, Stanford University, offered a brief discussion of the book. Nicoletta Batini, IEO, served as chair.

The IEO is the independent evaluation office of the IMF.
