It is unclear whether democracies or autocracies are more likely to silence or control the media when facing attempt at overthrowing the government. Our estimate of the dynamics of press freedom suggests that only successful coups against democracies lead to a substantial reduction in press freedom. Effects are larger in countries with large public spending.
