The Importance of Family Firms for the Development and Balance in the Business Sector

About half of all private companies with employees in the Swedish business sector are family firms. They operate in many different areas and can be of different sizes, from very large to smaller companies. So far, research into their unique business model and function in the economic ecosystem has been limited. This research project aims to study family firms' role in the business sector's development and balance.

Questions we will investigate within the project are:

  • How do family businesses affect job creation and job destruction in the business sector?
  • How does the size of the family firm affect its efficiency? Can smaller family firms create a better corporate culture?
  • Does the role and efficiency of family firms depend on whether they operate in sparsely populated areas or large cities?
