Ownership, Entry and Competition in Urban and Rural Service Markets

This project contained studies of how ownership, entry and competition affect productivity and efficiency in home care and retail. The researchers made use of bigger databases and new data which did not exist before the digitalization of these markets. Geographical market differences were highlighted in the analysis.

To study home care, new data were collected directly from a number of Swedish municipalities. The data collection was enabled by the recent digitalization, with electronic measurement of the time use of employees. In retail, the researchers had access to a large and detailed database covering all retail stores in Sweden since 2001. This database, with information on ownership, store type, and sales area, is unique and enables extensive analyses at the store level.

The project was financed by a grant from Jan Wallanders och Tom Hedelius stiftelse.
