Does Mining Expansion Affect the Local Economy?

It has long been considered that mining establishments have little impact on the local economy and there has been talk of economic enclaving. However, this statement is based on aggregated data that are difficult to interpret. The purpose of this study is to study the Swedish mining expansion between 1990 and 2010 and its impact on the local economy with disaggregated data. In particular, the period preceding a mine opening is studied, as the impact before the mine opens can have direct economic effects (infrastructure and earthworks).
