Florin Maican's primary research is in the field of industrial organization and applied microeconomics, particularly the industry dynamics and determinants of intensity of competition such as productivity, R&D, entry and exit. Florin's work closely connects to competition and business policy.

In recent years, Maican has analyzed competition in retail food, R&D intensive industries, and information technology (IT) services. He has evaluated the impact of aggregate demand shocks on industry dynamics and estimated industry dynamics primitives such as sunk costs of entry, costs associated with exit, costs of adjustment in labor, capital or product repositioning in service industries.

Florin Maican's secondary research is in the field of international finance with a focus on exchange rates. He examines the speed of convergence in real exchange rates
